INTERNET GLOSSARY OF TERMS

search engine - a 'look-up' directory service for websites

AOL - America OnLine, a leading ISP even in the UK

site/website - an individual or corporation's homepage, their doorway or shopfront in cyberspace

cyberspace - the virtual world of the internet

ISP - Internet Service Provider

download - the receipt of software via telephone and modem direct to your PC's hard disk

PC - personal computer

crash - a computer software or hardware breakdown

modem - the piece of equipment that sits between telephone and PC

net/web - the world wide web (www) or internet

log on - stay connected to the internet by computer, modem and telephone

shareware - software for free 30 day trial, a fee is paid to the author if you wish to continue using it.

freeware - non-commercial software available for free, forever!

full-product - i.e., not a limited time or features demo/trial version

kbps - kilobytes per second

kilobyte = 1024 bytes (each byte holds one piece of data)

MB - megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
