A very lightweight (1.65kg) and longlasting (3.5 - 7 hrs battery life) business laptop
IBM laptops are renowned for their build quality, many can be dropped 3 feet (voiding the warranty of course) with only scratches to show for it. The laptop keyboard is second to none and compares with the mechanical key travel feel of a decent full keyboard. The battery life exceeds most rivals by a factor of 1.5 to 3x, especially when a second battery is added in the multibay extending life to 4-8 hours. They are 1/2 to 1 kilo lighter than comparable laptops from Toshiba, Compaq, HP, Dell and especially when compared with the cheaper budget laptops from non-brand names which often weigh in excess of 3kg, something you will notice if carried around a lot.

Beautifully designed sub-notebook
"The IBM Thinkpad X30 is an excellent sub-A4 notebook offering speed, great battery life and good ergonomics in a light, robust and compact package. It doesn't come cheap, of course, and you have to fork out more for the floppy and optical drives and docking base, but there's no doubt that the Thinkpad X30 is a cut above." (Read full review)
5 Stars out of 5
"Rigid design; great battery life; excellent keyboard; great overall performance...a sub-4 pound design that feels as rigid as a tank, has a far better keyboard than the competition, and provides a smart array of appropriate expandability options." (Read full review)

8.2 out of 10
"...when we came to the battery rundown test, we got a very encouraging 3 hours 37 minutes under BatteryMark 4.0.1 from the primary 4,400 mAh Li-ion battery. IBM supplies a secondary battery pack which clips onto the base, adding somewhat to the bulk and bringing the weight up to 2.1kg. With this unit on-board, battery life rises to a very impressive 6 hours 57 minutes. ... The main justification, though, is the obvious quality of the X30, which is evident everywhere -- from the build quality, to the design of the keyboard, to the impressive battery life and performance." Editor's Rating 4 out of 5
"IBM ThinkPad X30 Is Nearly Perfect...it is the best small notebook PC we've seen yet. In giving up a half a pound of weight to flashier competitors (such as the Toshiba Portégé 2000), the 3.5-pound IBM ThinkPad X30 delivers well over 4 hours of battery life, offers every flavor of connectivity currently in vogue, and bristles with virtually every I/O connector...The main six-cell battery of the X30 was good for 4 hours 33 minutes on our BatteryMark test. If that's not enough, IBM offers three additional battery options, any two of which should put you over the magic 8-hour mark...the IBM X30 is unlikely to be matched." (Read full review)
