Acronis True Image 7.0 offers an innovative interface and powerful features. Its menu-driven wizards are easy to follow, and its help topics explain common tasks in detail. The Disk Clone function duplicates a hard drive to another one directly, saving time and resources. You can also store a snapshot of a hard drive to optical media or to another networked computer. This release of True Image includes incremental backups, which sets it apart from the other drive imaging products in this roundup; this procedure eliminates the need to regenerate an entire archive each time you need a new image. The Create Bootable Media wizard generates bootable recovery CDs or floppy disks, which load the program in DOS mode to perform common tasks such as restoring a hard drive, provided you've created a snapshot of the drive using the Create Image wizard.

Tested in two Win XP computers Acronis fails both via Startup recovery manager as well as via recovery CD. One of errors it produces is the statement that there are no images in secure zone in spite of the contrary. A typical error is that the process only freezes. Accessed via Windows the images seem to be OK. This means that in order to restore the primary, booting partition you better have a working, bootable hard disk, for example borrowed from your other computer, with which you are able to access your image.

So far, I have been very please with True Image. Within two weeks of installing it I installed a program that caused my Windows XP system to reboot (BSOD) or freeze constantly. I booted up the Acronis Recovery CD and restored my C: drive without incident. The only data I lost was a few emails that were stored in the default directory on the C: drive. My data partition (D: drive) was unblemished.

I bought the product and had to bug them via email and voice mail for 3 weeks before they sent me a serial number so I could use the product. Now that I have used it, I find that it just stops in the middle of disk cloning. And, after many tries, it still fails to burn a recovery CD.
