Real Time Live Speech Translation Technology

NewScientist.com news service reported on 31 October 2005 that technology providing real time translation of speech from one language to another has been demonstrated by US and European scientists, at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. They were developed by researchers at the International Center for Advanced Communication Technologies (InterACT), a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon and the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. Professor Waibel demonstrated the system almost instantly translating his talk in English simultaneously back into German and Spanish. The speech translation software uses speech recognition and voice synthesis with statistical techniques to speed up the words and phrase selection based upon scans of previously translated documents to build probability rules for translation.
